Abstract

|
Craniolacunia was originally described by Hoffmann in 1874, and Engster introduced the term "Luckenschadel" in 1905. Lacunar skull, an anomally of the newborn, is usually associated with spina bifida and occasionally with cranium bifidum. Grossly these defects are shallow depressions or deeper cavitations, varying considerably in number, size and shape, and are usually localized to the parietal bones. According to Wieland, the defects are particularly common in the midline, but they also may be observed in the frontal or occipital bones. In spit of the relatively small number of cases reported until recently, the condition obviously occurs more frequently than has been indicated previously in the literature and is often undiagnosed. We have observed a fetus with craniolacunia in a 28-year-old pregnant women in prenatal study. The infant, delivered by caessarian section, was proved to be having meningocele and spina bifida in addition to lacunar skull.
